Poutererangi- Limited Edition

$80.00

Poutererangi

The threshold between Te Ao Mārama and Te Pō.

Poutererangi is a place associated with the entrance to Rarohenga, the realm of the dead. In kōrero concerning Hinetītama, she travels towards Poutererangi after leaving the world of light, encountering Te Kūwatawata, the guardian at the entrance to Te Pō.

It is a powerful moment of transition. Hinetītama turns away from Te Ao Mārama and takes her place in Te Pō, becoming known as Hinenuitepō.

This artwork explores that threshold between worlds: light and darkness, life and death, departure and guardianship.

Rather than depicting Hinenuitepō simply as a figure associated with death, the artwork is inspired by traditional kōrero in which she is also understood as a grandmother and guardian of her descendants.
