Kawakawa is one of the most valued plants in rongoā Māori, known for supporting healing across the body, mind, and wairua. It is traditionally used to help with digestive problems, skin conditions, infections, toothache, circulation, colds, and general fatigue, and is often described as the pharmacy of the forest.
Its distinctive heart-shaped leaves reflect its role in healing the ngākau, and kōrero tells how kawakawa helped restore Papatūānuku after the separation from Ranginui. Closely connected to Tāne Mahuta, kawakawa is also worn during Tangihanga and used in ceremonies supporting movement between tapu and noa.
Kawakawa remains a powerful symbol of protection, mourning, transition, and renewal within te ao Māori.
